The first and most notable of these changes is the fact that this is official, Google-certified Chrome OS with the full-blown Chrome browser. That’s a hefty list of improvements, but I want to discuss a few that will really make this new version of Chrome OS a more viable solution for not only IT admins, enterprise and education users, but for general consumers as well.

There are plenty of things that are the same, but there are some key differences that make Chrome OS Flex a very big deal moving forward. Chrome OS Flex – while sharing a great deal with CloudReady – is the next phase of Neverware’s cloud-based OS solution now that Google is on board and in control. Advertisementsįor Google, then, the question becomes: “Why bother with this?” Why re-launch an already-working solution, rebrand it and make a big deal about its release? Well, the answer to that is actually pretty clear once you start looking at the two side-by-side. Those same users will also likely note that Google acquired Neverware over a year ago at this point and the similarities between CloudReady and Chrome OS Flex are largely due to this move that happened in December of 2020.

Once you are satisfied that this is the OS for your computer you can also install it to the hard disk, and so enjoy a faster performance.This week, Google made a pretty monumental announcement in the form of Chrome OS Flex, but as most users will likely note, Chrome OS Flex bears some pretty striking resemblance to a product that has been in circulation for years at this point: Neverware’s CloudReady. The USB disk will retain the login information next time you boot from it, so you can use the USB disk on different computers and still get to your data. At this point you may continue and use the USB disk as a live system, leaving your computer untouched. Once you are past the initial boot screens it will ask for your Google login. You cannot run it from within Windows or macOS. But even if your computer is relatively recent, this OS will give you a fast, secure and Cloud-service-connected experience. If you have an old PC, Mac or laptop it would be worth trying as it is less demanding than Windows or macOS. Once up and running you can install additional apps and extensions via the Chrome Web Store.

However, although Google’s Chrome OS allows for the install of some Android software via Google Play Store, Chromium OS does not. It is essentially similar to the Chrome OS which comes installed on Chromebooks, and most extensions and apps that run on Chrome OS will run within Chromium OS. So, the Neverware CloudReady OS installer disk allows you to install Neverware’s version of Chromium OS on any compatible laptop or desktop, but you can also run the OS from the disk itself as a live disk. We will always ship the latest version unless you request an earlier release, as the whole point is to have an up-to-date system on less recent hardware! But even if yours is not certified, as long as it has 2 GB of RAM, supports a 64-bit system, even if the boot firmware is only 32-bit, you should be able to successfully install. The list of certified computers is here, and CloudReady OS should work very well on these computers. Neverware CloudReady OS runs on certified devices and uncertified ones. However, the Home version is fantastic – creating a snappy, secure and up-to-date computer experience on even lowly computers. Unfortunately, we cannot provide the Enterprise or Educational version on disk.
